Chronicles

I left the front door open. They were gathered at the back. Knew it was time for rollin' as they busted in the latch. Twenty five years gone in eight seconds flat in the setting sun. Like a loaded gun.
I jumped in the car, hit the gas, I couldn't wait. Had to leave this dead town early 'cause my life got started late. Spittin up gravel and I'm clean of any slate in the setting sun. And away I run.
Searchin' for a hot meal. I was searchin' for a home. The nights were gettin' colder and I spent them all alone. Went about as far as I ever thought I'd roam and I just don't know where to go.
Thousand miles over I blew into a new town. Walked the straight and narrow 'til a woman slowed me down. One mornin' I woke up and she had on a wedding gown and she was stunned. 'Cause away I run.

Scarecrow

|

Stating down the barrel of a bottle
It starts swimming through my brain
I was better off in Colorado
WIth my gun my ball and chain
I can't be your scarecrow no more
Well on my way out just know
I won't be coming back this way
Six feet down this time tomorrow
I'll take your problems to my grave
I can't be your scarecrow no more

Mary Todd walks into the room
With a lamb on the shank in her hand
He's sitting at the desk
With the Gettysburg address
But she just don't understand
We all know he was tall and lean
A mild tempered man
Some people say he was from Illinois
But he's actually from Indian(a)
Oh why
John Wilkes Booth
He was born in a log cabin
And he stood about six-foot-four
Some people say he never came out the closet
Maybe he just couldn't find the door
He liked oyster stew biscuit too
Chicken fricasee on the side
His nickname was Honest Abe
Cause the motherfucker never lied
Oh why
John Wilkes Booth
Mary Todd walks into the room
With a lamb on the shank in her hand
He's sitting at the desk
With the Gettysburg address
But she just don't understand
We all know he was tall and lean
A mild tempered man
Some people say he was from Illinois
But he's actually from Indian(a)
Oh why
John Wilkes Booth

Lines

They found a cowhide in the creek last night.
He didn't win, but he sure put up a fight.
Cold water flowing on, on to the sea.
I found a letter in your writing last night.
I didn't break but I sure put up a fight.
Time keeps flowing on, flowing far from me.
Move along the open road
Straight ahead is all I am
Whistling pines pass through my mind
Border lines don't give a damn.
They found a man slumped in his barstool last night.
He didn't try, didn't put up a fight.
Blood keeps flowing on, away from everything.
Move along the open road
Straight ahead is all I am
Whistling pines pass through my mind
Border lines don't give a damn.

Trees

Trees are all dead
Words don't mean shit
Lost my mind
Bridges counting time
You're on your way

Time comes like the rise of the flood
And it changes me far too fast
Sometimes I'm on the streets alone
Without a past
The sun's got it's strings
They dig in the ground
Empty my mind
Swallow me far down
The leaves are falling
The leaves they're calling me
The leaves were all floating
Dancing on the lake
The shells were exploding
I felt the earth shake
I never did give
Quite as much as I'd take
And the stars never looked quite the same
The sun's got it's strings
They dig in the ground
Empty my mind
Swallow me far down
The leaves are falling
The leaves they're calling me
